The leadership of the Coalition of Concern Teachers in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions have threatened to embark on a strike action beginning September 2019 if the Insurance Policy being implemented for teachers is not halted.

According to the Coalition, they were put on the policy without any consultation from the Ghana Education Service.

They expressed regret that although they have not signed up for the policy, there are regular deductions from their accounts for that purpose.

William Owusu Acheaw, Chairman of Coalition of Concern Teachers for the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions in an interview with Citi News said, the government should have consulted and educated teachers before the implementation of the insurance scheme.

He said, members of the CCT are not interested in the insurance scheme because of the way it was being implemented.

He disclosed that already some members of CCT have enrolled on other insurance policies and so see no need for the imposition of a similar package on them by the Ghana Education Service.

“We are urging them to refund all they have deducted at the end of August or all our members in the region would withdraw our services in September 2019 when the next academic year begins.”

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) have also kicked against the deductions and have also called on the management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to stop the deduction of the SIC Insurance Premium from the salary of its members to ensure industrial peace.

The Ghana Education Service in collaboration with SIC Insurance Company on Tuesday, the 25 of June 2019 launched the insurance policy for teachers.

According to GES and SIC, it will attract a monthly premium of 10 cedis per month for a member and there will also be a cashback of 10 percent if no claim is made within three years.
