An Industrial Attachment is a structured, credit-bearing work experience in a professional work setting during which the student applies and acquires knowledge and skills. It involves the application of learned skills in an organization related to the student’s major.
Objective
The main objective of Industrial Training is to expose the students to the actual working environment and enhance their knowledge and skill from what they have learned in university. Another purpose of this program is to instil the good qualities of integrity, responsibility and self-confidence.
Challenges
Over the years, students getting placement in industries and organisations has always been a challenge since Students from a particular institution have to compete with other universities and polytechnic students for placement.
Most universities have partnered with industries and organisations in getting placement for their students.
Innovations
One unique and first of its kind was the introduction of Virtual Industrial Attachment (VIRA) by KTU and Virtual Internship Programme (VIP) by ATU for students who couldn’t get placements
Why do some students fail to do industrial attachment
- Students who failed to get placement and haven’t participated in the VIRA program end up without doing the mandatory industrial attachment.
- Some will get placement and will report to work for about a week and abandon it for reasons best known to them.
- Supervision can also be a reason, most students end up getting “IC'” in industrial attachment, because of the structure of some organisations, they will take students in batches, so some either complete their attachment early or late which by that time supervision haven’t started or had finished and some students fail to fill the assumption of duty form hence don’t get to be supervised
- Others due to circumstances beyond their control just can’t do it, examples are students who travel overseas for holidays, foreign Students who return home during the long vacation
- Finally, It is believed most students always want to outsmart the system, some students will stay at home and fraud information on their logbooks and write a report for marks which they end up being caught because they don’t have a supervisor
If you fall in any of the reasons mentioned about, it means you will end up not doing attachment and will get “IC” in your results
What happens if you fail to do an attachment?
In the case of KTU, if you fail to do an attachment either in your first or second year, you can visit the liaison office to make arrangements for a structured attachment which might cost you money to have your attachment done.
“IC” means Incomplete results
what do you think, leave your comments in the box below
Please what of those who couldn’t get place for an attachment what will happen to such students

Comment: why don’t liaison allow students who had not done their internship in first year to use the weeks remain before school resumes to do it and write report, then submit to the liaison office to the necessary actions?
You can visit the Liaison office for such an arrangement
What of those have still not been visited by their supervisor
Non of the supervisors have been to my place. I will appreciate it if you could help me contact them to know when he or she is coming before the internship is over.
Their office number will help.
Thanks!!
