Asamoah Gyan has announced his retirement from international football after 16-year career with the Ghana national team.
Gyan is the Black Stars’ most-capped player and top scorer of all time, but has decided to hang up his international boots upon consultation with his family and team.
According to the Ace journalist Saddick Adams, these are the push factors that led to asamoah gyan’s resignation;
1. Few months ago, coach contemplated dropping him from squad cos he wasn’t playing, was battling injuries and form had dipped.
2. He started playing and was included in a 30-man provisional squad prepared 2 weeks ago
Just a few days ago, the coach phoned Gyan to congratulate him on his return. It was here that coach informed Gyan of a decision to make him the general Captain of the team whiles another player leads the team on the field at AFCON2019.
Gyan obviously didn’t accept decision. The coach explained that, it was same manner he handed the captaincy to Gyan circa 2012, whiles his senior John Mensah acted as General Captain. Gyan asked to be allowed time to think about decision.
After some Two hours, Gyan returned call and told coach he won’t accept the decision once he is around and fit, he must be captain. But coach stood his ground.
Asamoah Gyan wrote on twitter; “Upon consultation with my family and team, and as an active footballer and captain of the national team, if the decision of the coach is to give captaincy of the tournament to another player while I am named in the team of the tournament,” he continued.
“I wish to recuse myself from the tournament. I also wish to retire from the national team permanently; not pretending my presence would not fuel the purported undermining the country has seen under my captaincy.
The coach is currently defending that decision and many others, in a meeting with the Normalization Committee.
