GNUTS condemns lynching of Captain Mahama

Accra, June 1, GNA – The Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS) on Wednesday condemned the “barbaric and uncultured” actions meted out to Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama who was the detachment Commander at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region.

A statement signed by Mr Prince Agbofah Awuku, the Public Relations Officer of the Union and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said “such lawlessness and barbaric acts dent democratic credentials of our dear nation and must not be entertained.”

The union decried the action of some youth of the Denkyira-Obuasi was unacceptable in a civilised and democratic society such as Ghana and completely violated the rule of law.

The GNUTS called on the government to investigate the matter and ensure that perpetrators of such unlawful acts were brought to book.

GNUTS also cautioned Ghanaians to be law-abiding citizens and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“We express our condolences to the family of the deceased, who are heartbroken over the unfortunate development.”

In the early morning hours of May 29, Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama went jogging along a road in Denkyira-Obuasi, in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central region.

He belonged to the 5th Infantry Battalion (5BN) at Burma Camp in Accra but was stationed in Denkyira-Obuasi where he commanded a detachment of soldiers officially deployed for duties in the Upper Wassa Forest Reserve.

A woman who saw him mistakenly assumed he was an armed robber and raised the alarm, attracting a mob stoned to him death and his body set on fire.

There are videos and pictures circulated on social media that purportedly recorded the terrible incident.
